SAFE asks donors to help ‘Heal a Hero’

Soldiers and Families Embraced (SAFE) is a valued, community-based resource that provides off-post counseling for many soldiers and family members, including children, suffering from the effects of post-traumatic stress and the aftershocks of soldier suicides. The organization, which started out with only a few clients, now finds itself inundated as a result of its own reputation for effectiveness.

“A Day in the Life” of… a Social Worker for SAFE

I’m in the SAFE Offices two days a week advocating and assisting clients, however the bulk of my time is spent at a local middle school as part of a partnership between SAFE and the school. Administrators requested that we consider providing an on-site counselor specifically to work with military connected at-risk kids. Many of these teens have one or both parents who have been deployed multiple times into combat zones.

A Letter from our Director

This time last year SAFE (then Lazarus Project) had to ask the counselors working for us to either stop seeing clients or work for free. That’s when we had our first fundraiser – the breakfast – which raised enough money to pay our back debts and to pay for counselors for a few more months. We could not stop raising money though and were able to simply stay a month or two ahead.
